a City set on a Hill that cannot be hidden
I have decided. We are manifestations. Will you intentional become?
In October 2019, a younger cousin married and invited the entire family to Athens, Greece to
celebrate her nuptials. It was a beautiful occasion; one where family who had not spent much time together in years, got opportunity to reacquaint, help one another see things clearly, explain boundaries and rational for feelings, thinking and doing things. Love on one another after a devastating loss. All in the midst celebrating a fresh new beginning of LOVE.
While there, we toured The Acropolis of Athens an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens. It contains remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance, the most famous – the Parthenon.
We were in awe of the beauty, cuisine, history and biblical significance of Athens and its surrounding islands. As we toured, the Acropolis of Athens stood out; it could be seen from almost everywhere on the island.
It was impossible to hide these cities erected upon the hills. Standing in awe of them gave additional insight into Matthew’s advice given in the New Testament to believers in Christ
You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden – Matthew 5:14 NLT
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its savor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. (verses 15-16)
- Light guides, brightens a pathway, provides help to see clearly
- City a place to settle with defined boundaries (sophisticated system of transport, communication, sanitation, and housing)
- Hill a high or elevated place; anything strategically positioned on top of a hill is meant to be seen
- Salt purifies, seasons, has nutrients, and preserves
Once profession of belief in Christ, and a follower, one is positioned seen as light to reflect what they believe. And, to help others see Christ more clearly. Boundaries are set around what you do, say and where they go. This verbal and nonverbal communication reflects an elevated place. People that are unbelievers look for the difference. Spiritually, believers are seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:6 All the nutrients we need to live in the word of God even through the world tries hard to influence us otherwise. The digesting the word of God help us in all things pertaining to life and godliness. 2 Peter 1:3 We can become that witness positioned and equipped that essence and beauty cannot be hidden
